Important Change to Ethnic Origin Code and Ethnic Origin Enhanced Code
in the Student Data Warehouse

Mandated changes to IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System) reporting required an expansion of the Ethnic Origin Code and Ethnic Origin Enhanced Code in the Student and Student Snapshot tables.   As of August 4, 2009, the categories “Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander” (NHPI)  and  “Two or More Races” have been added and are represented by values of ‘60’ and ’90’ respectively.  Race code was used to assign a student to the traditional Asian or the newly created NHPI category.  Race code was also used to assign students into the “Two or More Races” category.  Therefore the Asian category and other categories are now numerically reduced by the creation of these two new categories.  Below are three examples:

Sample Values Prior to or Equal to Summer 2009 snapshots:

Race Cd Value-- Description Ethnic Origin Code Value--Description
Student ‘A’ 818 – White Japaneese 50 – White
Student ‘B’ 611 – Japanese 10 – Asian; Nat Hawaiian; or Pac Isld
Student ‘C’ 660 – Guamanian  10 – Asian; Nat Hawaiian; or Pac Isld

Sample Values after Summer 2009 snapshots:

Student ‘A’ 818 – White Japaneese 90 – Two or More Races
Student ‘B' 611 – Japanese 10 – Asian
Student ‘C’ 660 – Guamanian  60 – Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander

IMPORTANT: Impact to existing reports

Approximately 10% of Asian students were moved into the new NHPI category.  As a result, counts of Asian students will average about 10% less than in previous reports.  You must examine existing reports to insure they are reporting on the new NHPI and Two or More Races categories.
