Distribution List
A process for distributing an email message to several people or
groups at one time.

A program for sending, receiving, viewing and managing email. Eudora,
Outlook Express and Outlook are examples of email clients.

Microsoft enterprise-level server that will hold all centrally-provisioned
faculty, staff and student email services at WSU.

GAL
Global Address List. A listing of all WSU email accounts on the
Exchange Server.

Headers
Information that is added to the beginning of each email that records
the network path from source to destination. This information is
usually hidden and requires expansion to be viewed.

IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol. A method for email clients to
view email on an email server.

LDAP
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. An Internet protocol that
email programs use to search a server for contact information.

List Processor (listproc)
A program that allows people to subscribe and unsubscribe from an
email list as well as managing the sending of messages to the lists'
subscribers.

MAPI
Messaging Applications Programming Interface. A proprietary interface
used by Outlook to connect to an Exchange Server. Also called "Native
Mode".

Message Store
The location where messages are received by an SMTP server and held,
waiting for email clients to retrieve them. Message stores are usually
just files on a hard disk, although some are databases.

MIME
Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions. A specification for formatting
non-ASCII messages so that they can be sent over the Internet.

Native Mode
Access method used to connect to the Exchange Server also called
MAPI.

NID
Network ID (WSU logon identification). An unique identifier used
to access the WSU network.

OE (Outlook Express)
A common email client that comes packaged with Internet Explorer.

Out of Office Assistant
When enabled, the Out of Office Assistant (also known as OOF)sends
an automatic reply to people who send you email. This is also referred
to as a vacation message and only available on the Exchange server.
Outlook in Native Mode Outlook configuration that uses MAPI protocol
to access services on an Exchange Server. See MAPI above.

Outlook Web Access (OWA)
The preferred client to view messages on an Exchange Server when
you are away from your desk top. OWA provides access to your email
folders as well as your online calendar, tasks, etc.

POP
Post Office Protocol. A method to retrieve messages from an email
server.

SMTP
Simple Mail Transport Protocol. The standard servers use to move
email across the Internet.

Spam
Slang for unsolicited bulk email (UBE). Also known as unsolicited
commercial email (UCE).

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)
A protocol using encryption and authentication of Internet connections.
All IMAP/ POP and web clients can communicate over SSL protocols
at WSU to protect personal data.

Unsolicited Bulk Email, also called spam

client used to access an email server.

WSU InfoNet
WSU electronic services portal. WSU InfoNet allows you to update
information about yourself, change passwords and create NIDs as
well as setting up your email services.

URL
Uniform Resource Locator. A standard for specifying the location
of a resource on the Internet. Example: http://www.wsu.edu

Vacation Message
Under the current unix email server (mail.wsu.edu) you would use
a .vacation command to let people know you are out of the office.
On the Exchange Server, Outlook has a feature called Out of the
Office Assistant that when activated, will let people know when
you are out of the office.
