Installing Symantec Antivirus (Apple)

Symantec Antivirus is an antivirus client provided for free to WSU students. These instructions detail downloading and installing the unmanaged version for Apple Macintosh OS X.

Downloading Symantec Antivirus for Macintosh

All eligible students can download Symantec Antivirus. After you have logged in with your Network ID, the download will begin.

After you click on the link to download Norton Antivirus, the install program will automatically save and extract to your desktop.

After the download is complete, close your web browser and find the Norton Antivirus Install icon on your desktop. Double click it.

A window will pop up with installation options for Apple OS X or OS 9. Double click on "Install for OS X".

Running the Installation

Find and double click on "Norton AntiVirus Installer" to begin the installation.

The installation program will begin checking the installation packages. Please wait while this step completes.

If you receive a message that the installer program must run a program, click Continue

The installation program will display notes about the installation progress. Click Continue

You will then see the Norton Antivirus End User License Agreement. Please read the agreement and click continue.

If you accept the agreement, click Agree

Click on the hard drive you would like to install Norton Antivirus on. For most people, the default option is fine.

Click Install to begin installing the software

If your account does not have the access rights, you will be asked for an administrative account and password to continue.

Your computer will warn you that a reboot might be required. Click continue.

Please wait while the installer will set up Norton Antivirus on your computer.

After installation is complete, the installer will prompt you to run Norton Liveupdate. Click Yes

Liveupdate will then connect to the internet and download the latest virus definitions

Scanning Your Computer

You should Scan your computer now.
