Overview |

The Microsoft Corporation has generously donated to Washington State University a campus wide subscription to the Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance (MSDNAA). The goal of the program is to get these tools into the hands of current students and eligible faculty. WSU is also the first university in the United States to take part in a program in cooperation with the e-academy corporation to directly download select Microsoft titles to eligible academic users. Current student and eligible faculty/staff can access the latest set of Microsoft developer tools for use in coursework and personal projects.

Frequently Asked Questions |
|
| |
Possible questions unique to WSU are answered below. For all other general questions, please go to http://www.msdnaa.net/faq.aspx.
- Isn't there an MSDNAA program already on the WSU campus?
Until recently, only one college, one school, and several departments on the WSU campus were hosting programs for their own students and faculty. With this new agreement, all eligible students, faculty, and staff can now participate.
- Can I purchase a computer with no operating system and then use this program to get a free copy of Windows XP or Vista?
Most likely, "no". Most hardware vendors do not sell machines without an operating system.
- Can staff get the software?
In limited situations, yes. Staff members who are directly involved in administering systems and providing support for MSDNAA software MAY install MSDNAA software themselves. However:
- Information Technology staff interested in assessing the suitability of these products for production services or infrastructure reasons would NOT be eligible.
- Other staff (e.g. Finance and Administration) desiring to use the software to improve their efficiency or experiment with new techniques would NOT be eligible.
- Is the program available in languages other than English?
The program is being launched first in English. Other languages may be added in the future depending on demand.
- When will computing labs be able to take advantage of this program?
Procedures for distributing media for use in labs are available. Interested Lab Administrators can direct questions to msdnaa@wsu.edu
- What happens to the software I've downloaded when I leave the University?
Students, faculty, and staff members are not required to uninstall software packages obtained through MSDNAA upon graduating or leaving the University as long as the usage still meets the program requirements. (teaching, learning, not-for-profit research and student personal use is acceptable - commercial, for-profit research, or faculty and staff personal use are not).
- What kind of computer is needed for downloading MSDNAA titles through ELMS?
Eligible users need a Windows machine with an internet connection. A broadband connection is highly recommended. If software titles in ISO format are downloaded, the necessary additional software and/or CD-Burning hardware must be available at the point of download.
