SSL SMTP

IT Services has now enabled Secure SSL on the mail.wsu.edu servers allowing users to send and receive secure mail, without the need for a VPN client.   In addition to using SSL, the SMTP server now requires the use of a Network ID and password for authentication.

Here are some simple configuration changes that you will need to make to have your email client use these new services.

Basic configuration changes for the secure SMTP change:

  1. Change the outgoing server to: smtp.wsu.edu
  2. Set the outgoing server to use SSL on port 465 (if specified)
  3. Set the outgoing server as requiring secure authentication
  4. Use your NETWORK ID and password (not Unix) for the outgoing server authentication
Changes to the following clients are described in detail below:

Windows Clients

Mac Clients

Eudora and Personalities

In the case of the Eudora client, there is no way to specify a separate user name and password for the outgoing server without the use of Personalities.

If your Network ID and password are different than your Unix ID and password, please follow the instructions on how to create a Personality in Eudora.

If you need assistance with any of these pages, please contact the ITS Helpdesk at 335-HELP or via our on-line form.
