Overview: Getting a New Employee Connected
The Current Process:
Butch just got hired. Here's what happens to get him using VPN and Exchage Services:
HRS’s goal is to complete processing the paperwork in time for Butch to get paid, so they may enter it into HEPPS anytime during (but typically not before) his first pay cycle.
When they are done, Butch will have a WSU ID number and a data upload (which occurs nightly) will cause him to be listed as a "current employee" in Active Directory.
Butch will then be able to self-serve an NID and then to initiate access to Exchange Services.
Possible wait time: Up to 2.5 weeks.
Speeding Things Up:
In order for Butch to self-serve an NID sooner, you can contact HRS ahead of time and ask them to create his WSU #.
They will need the Personnel Action Form (or a FAX copy) to create his WSU # and mark the record as eligible for a Network ID (also entering at least a name, address, birth date and SSN)
Exchange Accounts typically require that Butch be a “current employee” in Active Directory, however the ITS Service and Accounts Desk can respond to requests to get him into a special AD group that would allow setting up an Exchange Account earlier. Ask them here.
They can also place him in another special AD group to allow VPN access. (but you have to ask!)
Possible wait time: 2-3 days.
In the Future:
Late in 2007 or early 2008, we expect the PERMS system to allow all of this to occur before the new hires first day on the job, with access being allowed within 24 hours of the appointment being approved.
