Optical Scanning

Optical scanning services at WSU offer the customer two valuable resources. An economic and accurate method of collecting data and a variety of standardized statistical capabilities, as well as an efficient alternative to manual data entry for both the academic and business office environment.

The National Computer Systems OpScan 6 model 36 is a High-Speed, 16-level reflective-read scanner capable of reading both sides of a form at once at up to 3600 forms per hour.

Applications:NCS Scanner Mod 6

Tests & Exams Test scoring and statistical analysis of the results.
Surveys & Evaluations Surveys and Student/Teacher Evaluations.

Using the Forms:

Because the scanner is reflective-read, it is highly recommended that only #2 pencil be used. Most inks DO NOT reflect!

Scores can be printed directly on the test sheets.

Erasures and smudges are reliably differentiated from valid marks.

Forms are available for purchase at the Dispatch window at the Information Technology Services building in room ITB2176 located on Wilson Road. Click Here for directions to the Network Operations Center (Dispatch Window).

We supply a request form for job submittal, and tracking. This form can be picked up at the Dispatch window or requested through campus mail. The form is easy to use, but if you need assistance in filling it out, ask at the window when you pick up the forms, or Click Here.

Processing includes simultaneously reading both sides of the document, optional verification of data (e.g., checking for omits and double marks).

Test and survey results can be printed at ITB2176, (see Costs), or emailed to a customer's @wsu.edu address or data can be written to a customer's 3 1/2 formatted PC diskette, CDR/W or USB storage device.

We also offer a delimited file consisting of the 'raw data' from exams converted to an Excel spread sheet that can be sent via email or copied to your storage device.

Scan forms can also be designed to fit your needs. Contact University Publishing.

New user applications programs can be designed for the customer as well.
